The mechanic was irresponsible, rude and could have killed my son, and caused a fire in a house together, to exceed the leaky spot.

This is a civil matter is, if it is not a police investigation. The law and the ethics of the article can be a better answer.

I propose to explain in writing to the gas company to what happened, and calls to investigate the matter. This would be the best starting point.
